I Went Looking for Candles During a Blackout and Made an Unexpected Discovery

t started as an ordinary evening at home. The day had been uneventful, and I was looking forward to a quiet night. Dinner was finished, the dishes were put away, and the house had settled into that peaceful silence that comes after everyone has retreated to their own rooms. My son was already asleep, and I was making one final walk through the house before heading to bed myself. As I passed his bedroom, I remembered that I had been looking for a small flashlight earlier in the day. I thought there was a chance it had ended up in his room, so I quietly opened the door and stepped inside. The room was dark except for a faint glow from a streetlamp outside, which cast long shadows across the floor.

Trying not to wake him, I crouched down and looked beneath the bed. At first, I saw nothing unusual. There were a few storage boxes, a forgotten sock, and some dust gathered along the edges. Then my eyes caught sight of something farther back. It was partially hidden in the darkness, but I could immediately tell it didn’t belong with the other items.

The object had a strange shape. Even from a distance, it looked unusual enough to grab my attention. Curious, I reached underneath and slowly pulled it toward me.
