With no family members available to care for the dogs during his hospitalization, they were placed in the custody of NYC Second Chance Rescue. Knowing how much Bowie and Nikki meant to him, the rescue organization worked alongside the hospital’s medical team to arrange a final reunion, according to People.

Footage of the moment shows the dogs gently approaching Mr. Spencer’s hospital bed, immediately recognizing their owner. He reached out to pet them as they stayed close, refusing to leave his side.
“It was a tearjerker, seeing them get so excited to see their owner,” Jennifer Brooks, the founder of the Long Island City-based rescue, recalled to WCBS. “They laid near his bed. We stayed for quite a while.”
Brooks later explained just how central the dogs were to Mr. Spencer’s life.

“Mr. Spencer would talk about his dogs every day, and they knew how important the dogs were to him. They were the only family that he had,” she said.

The emotional reunion left a lasting impression on everyone in the room.

“There was a room of about 10 doctors, and literally, there was not a dry eye in the room,” Brooks recalled.

Only hours after seeing Bowie and Nikki, Mr. Spencer passed away.

Reflecting on the moment, Brooks believes the dogs understood the finality of the visit.

“I believe that seeing him in that state, [Bowie and Nikki] knew they had to move on now, and they’re gonna find a new, loving home.”

With no relatives or caretakers available to take the dogs, Mr. Spencer asked Brooks to make him a promise before he passed — that Bowie and Nikki would stay together and eventually find a loving forever home.

Brooks says she is fully committed to keeping that promise.
