If this bug appears in your bathroom, it means that you are … See below

A late-night trip to the bathroom turned unexpectedly dramatic when a loud “whap” against the light revealed an unusual visitor flying frantically around the room. At first glance, the insect looked alarming enough to trigger thoughts of disease, infestation, or something dangerous. But after closer inspection, it became clear that the noisy intruder was not a June bug at all—it was a cockchafer, also known as a May bug.

Despite its intimidating appearance and clumsy flying style, the cockchafer is completely harmless to humans and pets. It does not bite, sting, or carry venom, and it has no interest in invading homes permanently. The insect’s large pincers are used for eating leaves, not attacking people. In reality, it had simply become confused and wandered indoors after being drawn toward the bright bathroom light.

Cockchafers are nocturnal insects that emerge during late spring for a short flying season lasting only a few weeks. During this time, they fly noisily at dusk searching for mates and are strongly attracted to bright indoor lighting, especially in warm rooms with open windows or vents.

Experts recommend staying calm if one enters the house. Turning off indoor lights and opening a nearby window usually encourages the insect to leave on its own. If necessary, it can also be captured gently with a cup and released outdoors near trees or bushes.

Although they may startle unsuspecting homeowners, cockchafers actually play an important role in local ecosystems. Their larvae help aerate soil, while both adults and grubs provide food for birds, bats, and hedgehogs. Once heavily reduced by pesticides, their gradual return is now considered by many ecologists to be a positive sign for biodiversity and environmental recovery.
